For most of history, the Mujahideen were a rag-tag group of Muslim fighters, that were cobbled together from a multitude of nations to fight the USSR invasion of Afghanistan. After defeating the USSR, with assistance from the US, Saudi Arabia and logistic/operational support provided by Pakistan and its armed forces.

From 1989 onwards, the Mujahideen fought a domestic civil war against parties loyal to the former regime, the USSR and India. Finally, emerging victorious as the Taliban. Under the Taliban’s leadership, Afghanistan became a safe haven for terrorists and jihadis of all affiliations.

In 2001, post-9/11. the Taliban came under attack from US and international coalition forces who invaded Afghanistan for providing safe haven to al-Qaeda and its leadership.

After a gruelling war against the Taliban, the Doha Accords were signed and the US withdrew from Afghanistan in 2020, leaving the Taliban in power once again.
